Common Questions.

If you are new to this sport, you will have a lot of questions.  Hopefully the information below can answer some of those questions and get you pointed in the right direction.

What kind of bike do I need?

Any mountain bike in good working order will suffice. Most NICA riders prefer a short travel / cross-country oriented bike.

There are advantages and disadvantages available at a myriad of price points. Please see NICA's guidance at the link.

Things you must have.

  • Mountain Bike - In good repair / proper working order – please see video above
  • Bike Helmet - Proper fit and Good condition.
  • Gloves - Full-finger only | no open finger
  • Spare inner tubes - Even if you are running tubeless
  • Close-toe shoes - Clipless or flats based on preference
  • Water bottles with a bottle cage or hydration pack
  • Hand Pump or CO2 - With appropriate inflator head for your tube / tire
  • Quicklink / Masterlink - If a chain breaks, this will allow your rider to get off the trail without having to walk

What we recommend you have.

  • Eye Protection Glasses! (Clear or light tint as we will be riding at dusk most evenings)
  • Butt Bag / Saddle Bag (All of the stuff we carry needs to go somewhere.  A small butt bag/ fanny pack or under saddle bag will allow your rider to be able to carry all of the materials needed.  The kit does have pockets for some of the items, though it can be uncomfortable to carry everything there.)
  • Multi-Tool (optionally w/ chain breaker)
  • Clip less pedals 20% performance boost (If new to clipless, PRACTICE ON GRASS till you get the hang of it, not concrete or asphalt)
  • Cycling Computer Track your performance and watch your best times get better and better
  • Chain lube Keeping your drive train (chain and components) clean will keep you from having to replace parts longer
  • Track pump with pressure gauge Tires lose their pressure daily. Low tire pressure is the #1 reason for flats.
  • Medications (If needed)
  • Nutrition Riding fueled mean riding your best. The right food speeds your recovery (ideally riders should eat a meal high in carbs 2-3 hours prior to each practice/ race, and have a form of quick nutrition on the bike)
  • Brushes Weekly wash keeps your bike performing at its best!

Things you should never have.

  • A bad attitude
  • Ear buds/ headphones
  • Soda in your water bottle
