COST
Much of the cost of our team is defrayed by our generous sponsors. Even with our sponsorships, XC Racing is an expensive sport. The balance of the cost is carried by the racer and their family. Copper Hills XC MTB is not a sanctioned high school sport, the team members and their parents are required to pick up the balance.

$1,500+ Mountain Bike
This is where most parents start to have some heart burn, and I know that because I was one of those parents. So why are bikes so expensive? Bicycles that will stand up to the pressure and drive that we will be demanding of them also have to be light weight and have better components than the bottom end drive train. This brings the cost up on the bicycle. A bicycle that costs $1,500+ may seem like a lot of money, but keep in mind that bicycles can go up to $12k. Riding is a life-long sport and the purchase of a quality bike can last a life time. In the long run, spending the money on a quality bike will pay you back in dividends. You don't need to have the top-of-the-line bike, but it does need to stand up to some serious use.
If you don't already have a bike, or if you are uncertain as to whether the bike you plan to ride is suitable, spend time talking with multiple people, collecting opinions and recommendations before you find yourself making an overly spontaneous decision at the local bike shop. Our coaching staff would be happy to recommend a ride that would work and be a good fit.
Hangar 15 Bicycles, Scheel's, Taylor Bike Shop, and Fezzari, are all good options, and they are well set up with highly experienced and knowledgeable employees and mechanics.
In the past, students have been eligible for 15-25% discounts from Specialized, Scott, and Cannondale brands. (NICA pricing) The majority of bike manufacturers are not honoring this discount this season, as COVID has affected stock and supply chain. Trek Bicycles is the only vendor that is honoring a 25% discount for riders and certified coaches. (This is honored at Trek stores only.) We are hopeful that the other vendors will be honoring their discounts in the future, however it will be up to the manufacturers as to when and if this discount returns.
$50-200+ Equipment & Supplies
Helmets are mandatory. Clipless shoes and pedals are highly recommended. You must be self- sufficient. That means a spare tube, multi-tool, hand pump, water bottle / hydro pack, etc. As with any sport, the range of price, quality, style, etc. varies greatly, so if you are somewhat new, a coach or experienced team member will be happy to walk you through gear specifics and suggestions.
